Progetto Sani

The Sani Barracks is an abandoned and forgotten place. Historically, the first fort was an outpost in the wall which was to be used to defend the city. Time is running out and imposed the rhythm of life; stopping is not intended, either to take a look back. Today the barracks is a space that has been incorporated into the Bologna urban pattern. The use of the suffix ex before the name shows that it is no longer even a barracks. A non-place. But non-places don’t exist, there is rather the desire of people want to forget something that has stopped to play a role. The memory of the barracks remains in some buildings, blocks, apparently arranged at random, in the path of the old tracks and in a north curved sign, the old fort. A difficult framework to understand, from which stand out the slivers. Slivers, irregular fragments, mostly sharp and cutting, which have become detached from something that was present and very recognizable, but now it no longer is. The Sani Barracks, a green-area inner a dense and mixed urban pattern, formed by a part of a residential and industrial-productive, is filled from these slivers. The situation is reversed, there aren’t isolated buildings, but they are included in the urban pattern thanks to the presence of other slivers and green. Buildings which had a planimetric irregular shape, highlight and remind the whole of the strong primal fort. The perimeter of the barracks was well defined. A wall. A rift with the urban pattern. The wall is a proof of the history of this place, but it is modified and fragmented by slivers. The new perimeter will fit the needs of our days: an urban park to shield the area from existing plants. This permeable perimeter, formed by trees, down, accompanying the stream until it connects to the park Guido Rossa. The whole area is car-free. Cars are left underground. There are two main pedestrian cycle paths crossing the lengthwise area and these are supported by other internal streets, that follow the railway tracks present in the barracks. Slivers remember typical elements of Bologna. The colonnaded ground floors, immersed in the park, will provide a walk in the nature, with a reference to the shaded galleries of the historic center. Irregular buildings with prospects well defined by the rhythm of openings and color to the brick, will help to quote in people who live there, a flash of the red city and the barracks. Slivers will touch the existing buildings, which are well integrated into the present thanks to diversified functions. A barracks inhabited by the constant flood of people. Time is running out and imposed the rhythm of life; stopping is not intended, either to take a look back. The dynamics that have happened in the past, may reoccur in the future. For these reasons the buildings (the slivers) will have a wooden frame. These may be modified or even removed, with the guarantee of being able to reuse the material. Even the natural element, formed by the green and the water, with the passing of the seasons, will never be the same. The covered river network, returns outside, to educate people about the problem of global warming and to create intelligent solutions to use the rainwater. A park that can be flooded with suitable controls and mechanisms. A park that turns continuously. As well as slivers that can be modified over time. In this framework constantly changing and evolving, only the buildings belonging to the old barracks will remain unchanged on the exterior, just like totems. Evidence of what has been.
