The school must be an attractive place for the children who frequent it, open towards the city and the neighborhood, a “knowledge factory” that doesn’t remain confined within the walls of a building. We have chosen to use simple and defined forms, like industrial settlements, which allow us to use simple construction systems.
The district in which the new school will be built over the years has developed around the Acciaierie di Terni, a strongly connotative presence, with large closed parallelepipedal pavilions, developed in height (vertical mills) and in length. The proposed solution takes the geometric shape of the opificio, which is modified to create an open and transparent building that shows the life that takes place inside, making evident the design and construction choices adopted.
The new school is a learning garden, an organic space to discover and grow, characterized by the technology-nature mix, as stated in Wilson’s “Biophilia Hypotesis”, according to which the natural green element stimulates concentration and learning, encouraging socialization between people.
The presence of greenery is also important for the involvement of the families of the students and the inhabitants of the district in the operations of maintenance and management.
The constructive typology and the internal functional organization of the new building are also born from the bioclimatic study, concerning solar radiation, the distribution of the shadows of the project building and of the surrounding ones, in the different periods of the year. The wooden structure and the guttering are already a shielding system for direct sunlight.
The new school is made up of two orthogonal buildings, one destined to host the primary school, the other structured for the secondary school.
The two buildings are an “unicum” because they are connected by the entry element, located in the corner area on Via Tre Venezie, where is located the reception area (concierge, reception, information) and the large circular scale, that serves the various levels and the elevator.
The entry performs the function of mediation between the outside, the places intended for carrying out the teaching activity and the areas of the complex that can be used by the local community.
The building has been designed in such a way that it can be classified as NZEB.
